New York City faces three existential challenges in the post-Bloomberg era: providing greater opportunity for those in the middle and bottom of the income distribution; creating a shared sense of belonging within an increasingly diverse population; and helping families and neighborhoods to flourish in all parts of the city. If we fail to address them in governing New York City, the city will grow even more unequal, more divided, and less resilient.
Toward a 21st Century City for All, an initiative of the Center for Urban Research at the CUNY Graduate Center, convened a diverse network of stakeholders to develop an inclusive vision for city policy to help achieve a more just, equal and prosperous New York City in the coming years. Each essay in this volume offers a penetrating analysis of recent trends and proposes clear and practical yet daring ideas about how to move the city forward.
